The Olympics

Technically it's still summer vacation for me, so when I found myself awake at 8:30 this morning, I didn't really know what to do. It was one of those wake-ups where you are suddenly fully awake and even if you wanted to fall back asleep, you just can't. I like to sleep in... Way in... Like noon. Why the hell did my body tell me to wake up so early. Then I remembered a little thought I had while listening to Jason Smith on ESPN Radio, and it went a little something like this...

The matter in question was if the second week of the Olympics could live up to the first week. I tried to think about what had happened during the first week, and a few things came to mind. OBVIOUSLY Michael Phelps and his record 8 gold medals, Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson in an amazing display of gymnastics, and probably the greatest opening ceremonies ever. Jason Smith said that the second week was going to be kinda dull, strictly because all the Americans have to look forward to is "The Redeem Team", and even that will not be very exciting because, the way he looks at it, if we win the gold, we do what we expected to do. And if we don't win the gold, it will be a disappointment. Now here was my thought. I believe that Phelps made as much noise as he did because of the timing of his events being in semi-primetime time-slots. Now don't get me wrong, I don't want to rain on his parade, what Michael Phelps did was just amazing. My point is that the Redeem Team is playing in the mornings, thus not getting nearly as much exposure as Phelps and the gymnasts did.

Now that brings me back to 8:30 am this morning. The USA basketball team has been blowing out every team they come into contact with, average margin of win being 30 points. The smallest margin was 21 against Angola, and the biggest was a complete crushing of Dirk Nowitzki and Germany winning by 39.

So I was intrigued when we needed to play Australia, the only team who gave us a hard time during the preliminary games. To add to the fire, reports of Australia shooting their mouths off about how they were going to beat us started popping up. Could this be our true test? Have the Redeem Team met their match? The game was set for early this morning. I was interested, but not interested enough to wake up... Or so I thought.

I actually laughed when I finally realized that the game was on, ans when I found it on the TV, I laughed even harder. I started watching at the end of the third quarter, when the score read 84-61 I believe. Thats when I thought that what the basketball team was doing was just as special as Phelps. How can you be so much better than everyone? None can touch you, and you're just out there having fun throwing alley-oops to each other and dunking one ball after another. Why is there no love out there for the Redeem Team? I personally am not an NBA fan, but for some reason I got up at 8:30 in the morning to see if we were actually that good. And guess what? We are.

My New Love.

I just got a Blackberry Curve 8330, and it has pretty much taken over my life. I love my new phone and everything about it. I recently joined http://www.crackberry.com which is an online community about everything Blackberry. Its pretty cool, and even if you dont have a Blackberry and are planning on one day getting one, check the site out. Great reviews, forums, blogs, and free media for your BB.

Want a poster of your favorite pictures? This site lets you pick any image then print it out on multiple pieces of paper, then put them back together and stick it up on your wall. Hell, it beats paying 10-15 dollars at the store.

After the Game...

So the Giants Browns game just ended, what a game! Well, for a preseason game anyway. This game was filled with plenty of high flying offense, hard hitting defense, and a couple of great special teams plays. The final score of 34-37, however, did not do the game justice.

During the game, Tony Kornheiser said that nobody looks at the final score of a preseason game, just what the first string players do in the first one and a half quarters. Well in that case, the New York Football Giants looked just like the defending champs they are. by the time Eli came out of the game I believe the score was 30-3. Manning and Domenik Hixon hooked up twice in the end zone, both exceptional passes, and both more than exceptional catches. And if that weren't enough, Hixon then runs back a safety free kick for 82 yards for his third TD of the quarter... Thats right, three in one QUARTER. Long story short, the Giants look good.

Maybe the Browns should throw their second and third string teams out there, because The starters looked just awful. During the first quarter, Cleveland kept making dumb mistakes and getting penalized left and right for stupid things, such as "fifteen yards for swinging at a player and missing". I didn't make that up. That was a real call made by the referee. Sounds pretty stupid, huh? Mike Tirico was joking, "If you get fifteen yards for swinging and missing, how much do you get for swinging and hitting?" This made me, as well as others at the bar, laugh out loud (literally). Because that was the Browns' game was tonight, laughable. A blocked punt by their own player for a safety, a fumble resulting in a 95 yard TD run the other way by Eric Butler, not to mention Derek Anderson not being able to move the ball in the direction he wanted. I was actually surprised to see him still in there after the first quarter ended. He ended the night 4/10 with only 20 yards and "left the game shortly after with a possible concussion after being sacked by Osi Umenyiora." (ESPN.com) I always feel bad when someone gets hurt in a preseason game, especially your starting quarterback. Does this mean that good ole Brady Quinn will become the starting QB? I guess only time will tell.

Monday again... A little later on

Well, its been way too long since I posted, but nobody reads this blog yet, so I guess I have nobody to be sorry to... Yet. I hope this blog takes off, I really do. I like to talk about sports, but I'm not a one-track guy. I have many passions, thoughts, feelings, ideas, and i guess that a blog is as good a place as any to document such items of my life.

First and foremost, I was WAY wrong with my last post about Favre. When I said that he will end up as a Packer, it never dawned on me that the Jets were in the mix, and that they were so eager to cast Chad Pennington aside like some no-talent rookie. I think that this whole thing worked out as well as it could and that, like all wounds, time will heal Brett Favre and the Packers inner affliction. But thats all I will say on the matter, Favre is a Jet, Rodgers is the starting QB for the cheese-heads, and Chad Pennington, well he got screwed.

I'm going to watch the MNF game, I'll post after...
